Frankfurt's DAX sank about 3% to close at 21,700 on Thursday, its biggest daily decline since July 2024, in line with sharp losses across European and global markets. The global sell-off was triggered by US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff policy. The new "reciprocal tariffs" include a 10% baseline on all US imports, a 20% tariff on goods from the European Union, and a 25% levy on imported cars. Most sectors saw significant declines, with sportswear giants Adidas and Puma leading the losses, both falling over 11%. The U.S. fashion and sportswear industries rely heavily on imports, with 98% and 99% of their products, respectively, sourced from abroad. Banks, tech firms, and auto stocks also faced substantial pressure. On the positive side, defensive sectors such as real estate, utilities, and healthcare saw gains.
