This marks the fourth consecutive month of slowing growth, reflecting the weakest expansion rate since April, as both production and new orders increased only marginally. Staffing levels declined for a second straight month amid concerns about underlying demand and broader economic conditions. Efforts to control inventory costs led to destocking of both inputs and finished goods. Although confidence in the economic outlook remains historically low, it showed a slight improvement compared to September. Additionally, the latest price data revealed an acceleration in cost inflation, with material input prices rising at an above-average pace. In response, firms modestly increased output charges following a period of stagnation in September.

The Taiwanese economy expanded by 3.97% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2024, easily surpassing market expectations of a 3.4% gain, although it slowed from a 5.06% growth in the previous three-month period, preliminary estimates showed. Domestic demand contributed to the slowdown of the country’s GDP, with household consumption easing (1.92% vs. 2.77% in Q2), while government spending increased (3.9% vs. 1.9%). Meanwhile, net external demand rose, as both exports (8.67% vs. 7.65%) and imports (10.15% vs. 13.33%) continued to accelerate. On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the country's GDP climbed 4.38% in the third quarter of 2024, accelerating from an upwardly revised 1.16% rise in the previous three-month period.

Sentiment weakened for most components, with declines seen in expectations for prices (41.77 vs 43.49 in September), family’s financial situation (85.03 vs 86.38), domestic economic prosperity (89.37 vs 90.56), employment opportunities (78.18 vs 79.49), and the timing for buying durable goods (107.69 vs 109.74). Conversely, confidence improved regarding the timing for investing in stocks (60.29 vs 57.38).
