Imports to Taiwan rose to 6.5% year-on-year to USD 34.4 billion in October 2024, slowing sharply from a 17.3% growth in the previous month. This marked the softest expansion since May, as imports declined for mineral products (-14.2%), particularly petroleum (-31.6%). However, sales increased for information, communication and audio-video products (18.6%), parts of electronic products (14.9%), and machinery (13.6%). Among main suppliers, purchases went up the most from South Korea (61.5%), followed by ASEAN countries (13.3%), Europe (12.4%), and Japan (5.9%). Considering January to October period, imports were posted at USD 323.97 billion, a 9.8% higher than during the corresponding period last year.

Exports from Taiwan grew 8.4% from a year earlier to USD 41.3 billion in October 2024, accelerating from a 4.5% rise in the previous month, albeit missing the market expectations of 9% gain. The upturn was mainly attributed to increases in exports of information, communication and audio-video products (28%), base metals and articles of base metals (6.2%), parts of electronic products (6.1%), and machinery (1.5%). However, sales declined for plastic and rubber and articles thereof (-6.6%). Among major trading partners, exports soared to South Korea (21.4%), followed by the USA (20.5%), and the ASEAN countries (13.1%). Considering January to October of 2024, exports were registered at USD 390.42 billion, a 10% higher compared to the same period last year.

Taiwan's trade surplus increased to USD 6.87 billion in October 2024 from USD 5.76 billion in the same month of the previous year, above market forecasts of USD 6.15 billion. Exports advanced by 8.4% year-on-year to USD 41.3 billion, mainly driven by higher sales of information, communication and audio-video products (28%), base metals and articles of base metals (6.2%), parts of electronic products (6.1%), and machinery (1.5%). Considering January to October period, the country’s trade surplus was recorded at USD 66.45 billion, 11% higher compared to the corresponding period last year, with exports rising 10% and imports increasing by 9.8%.

The annual inflation rate in Taiwan eased to 1.69% in October 2024, the lowest since March 2021, down from 1.82% in September and below market forecasts of 1.8%. The decline was mainly driven by lower inflation in several sub-indexes, including food (2.70% vs 3.0% in September), housing (2.25% vs 2.39%), health (2.51% vs 2.60%), and education & entertainment (1.27% vs 1.74%).
