Sweden’s trade surplus widened sharply to SEK 6.2 billion in December 2024, up from SEK 1.3 billion in the same month last year. Exports fell by 0.7% year-on-year to SEK 158.7 billion, with increased sales to non-EU countries (+2.4%) partially offsetting a decline in exports to EU countries (-3.4%). Meanwhile, imports dropped more sharply, falling 3.8% to SEK 152.5 billion, driven by reduced purchases from both EU (-3.4%) and non-EU (-4.6%) countries. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade surplus rose to SEK 4.1 billion from SEK 2.7 billion in the previous month. For the entire year, the trade surplus increased to SEK 67.5 billion from SEK 45.9 billion last year, as exports declined by 1.9% and imports fell by 3%.

This marked the highest unemployment rate since September, as the number of unemployed people increased by 21 thousand to 454 thousand, while employment grew by 2 thousand to 5.19 million. The employment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points to 68.1%, while the labor force participation rate advanced by 0.1 percentage points to 74.1%. The average number of total hours worked in December amounted to 148.1 million per week. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate stood at 8.5%, unchanged from the preceding period.

Producer prices in Sweden climbed by 2% year-on-year in December 2024 from 0.3% in the previous month. This marked the highest producer inflation since May, as prices accelerated for consumer goods (4.5% vs 3.7% in November) and capital goods (3.6% vs 1.5%). Moreover, deflation eased for energy-related products (-8.8% vs -10%). Excluding energy-related products, annual producer inflation came at 3.9%. On a monthly basis, producer prices slowed significantly to 0.1% in December from 3.1% in the previous month.
