For those looking for a genuine ECN I would offer the following advice： Floating Spreads, In a true ECN trading environment the spread (i.e. the difference between the bid/sell prices) will never be fixed. The spread cannot be fixed in a real ECN trading environment because in a real market place there are no restrictions on what levels traders can offer to buy or sell at. In a real market place the bid and ask prices are just the best prices that someone is offering to take the other side of your long or short trades at, at any given time. As traders place different buy and sell offers the difference between the bid and sell prices (i.e. the size of the spread) will constantly vary. Offers Between The Bid/Ask Price, In a real ECN trading environment traders can place offers inside the spread. Brokers who are Market Makers will not usually allow traders to do this as offers placed between the bid and ask prices will generally drive the spread closer together and it is from the spread that Market Makers make their profits when they're not betting against their clients. Market Makers usually fix their spreads, but in a true market place only the market can determine the spread and traders can place offers at any price they like. Ultra Tight Spreads & Small Commissions, Market Makers and some STP brokers generally profit from an artificially wide spread and do not charge commissions except for holding positions over-night. With a real ECN broker, not only will the difference between the bid and ask prices vary, but the spread will generally be far lower than with STP brokers and Market Makers. During times of high liquidity spreads can often fall to as low as 0.1 pips on major currency pairs such as the EUR/USD. You will never get spreads this low with a Market Maker. This is because ECN brokers let the market determine the spread based on where the buy and sell orders are at any given time and they never mark-up the spread. ECN brokers make their profits from a small commission that they charge for each lot turned around. ECN brokers are therefore totally transparent with what they are actually charging their clients for providing their services and have nothing to gain from any of their clients loses. Depth Of Market, All real ECN brokers will provide a window on their trading platform where traders can see Depth Of Market (DOM) information in real time. The Depth Of Market information window shows traders all the other orders in the system. With an ECN broker the entire market place is transparent and all traders can see exactly where the liquidity lies. Nobody has access to any special inside information from the broker as all the position/offer information is already public and is available to all.
