Sydney March 12.
A matching system failure in Sydney early this morning exaggerated
volatility, but stops in the EUR/JPY caused the price to rise from an opening at
155.15 to test 155.75, while the EUR/USD climbed from 1.3115 to 1.3140 and the
USD/JPY opened at 118.30 and tested 118.40. AUD and NZD also triggered topside
stops in a 0.7795/0.7836 range and 0.6915/60. The price action suggests that
carry trades were bought across the board, but dealers suggest that USD
component flow rather than JPY cross demand caused the surge in JPY cross
prices. NZD/JPY closed in NY around 81.70 and has traded above 82.25, while
AUD/JPY closed around 92.30 and has tested 92.70.
